The Gathering

15 July, 2008 (10:17) | Analog, Digital Cameras, Digital Photography, Film Photography, Lomography, People, Photography, SLR Cameras, Southern Lomo, Toy Cameras, Travel | No comments

After the Saturday night gig at the place to be down south of Manila, Kamada Boy Bar and Resto. After countless young bands playing emo/screamo songs.  After two “Kuya” bands, Chivalry Rites and BetterFiller.

Sugar and I have agreed that we ditch the Fort Santiago shoot and head down south, well, as the literal meaning of our community, Southern Lomo. It would be logical if we feature places and culture from the south. We will visit century old churches and some other interesting places in Laguna.

The Gathering

“The Gathering” will be Southern Lomo’s major get together and photo shoot. Hopefully all of the members, or at least, most of the members will be able to join us in this roadtrip. The usual suspects will be there of course. Gino and I even decided that we will push through with the plan no matter what.

The hell with the increasing gas price. We will hop into the car and drive our way to Laguna, Southern Lomo style.

My Gadget Fix for the Year 2008

20 June, 2008 (10:26) | Digital Cameras, Digital Photography, Photography, SLR Cameras | No comments

I have been planning to buy a digital SLR camera for years even if I already have two film SLR and aside from that, I also have a Holga 120FN medium format camera and a FishEye2.

Getting a digital SLR would be my gadget fix for the year 2008 even if my phone got stolen a week ago. I would gladly use my dad’s Nokia N70 for the moment. I won’t be getting any expensive phone yet. Maybe next year when W960i is bit cheaper.

I am planning to buy a Nikon D40. You may ask me why the hell would I get a Nikon D40 if I can get a Canon 450D. Well, Nikon D40 is way cheaper than Canon 450D. Nikon D40 is only around 23k and can haggle it for a lower price. I would rather save up for the lens and other camera stuff.

Take a look at what I’ll be buying, probably next month!

Analog in the digital age

17 May, 2008 (14:31) | Analog, Film Photography, Lomography, Photography, SLR Cameras, Southern Lomo, Toy Cameras | No comments

It’s always fun to go against the flow. Just like now, instead of saving money to get a decent DSLR, I have been splurging my salary on analog cameras. I currently have four analog cameras three of which was purchased within the last three months. I know, it’s like throwing away money but hey, I am happy with my collection and hobby. I am broke at times but I can manage, there’s a lot of cheap places to eat. Since my collection is growing as time goes by, I decided to give a name to each of my camera. So, here they are… Meet my babies… (Mouse-over the pictures to see their names and models.)

Mika | Ricoh XR-500 | Rikenon P Zoom 35-70mm Macro 1:35-4.5

Chekwa | Nikon F70 | Tokina AF 28-210mm 1:3.5-5.6

Jennie | FishEye2

FishEye2 | Review

I bought my FishEye2 and RingFlash from Jennie Castillo back in April 3, 2008 for only 6800 Pesos. It’s really great. The camera is pretty compact and straight forward. There’s actually no need to read the manual before using it. L for lock, N for normal and B for bulb, that’s it. Just point and shoot.

FishEye2 | Ring Flash

FishEye2 + Ring Flash

The ringflash on the other hand is pretty useful so that you would have an equal lighting especially if you will try to get a close-up shot of your subject. The ring flash also comes with 4 color rings (Blue, Yellow which is greenish, Red, Milky White) as well as 12 pieces of colored gel filters if you wish to have a multi-colored splash in your subject. Good thing about the ring flash is that it comes with 5 plastic adaptors which makes it compatible with Holgas, Diana, FishEye, FishEye2 and LCA.

Ring Flash

I haven’t tried using using a slide film on my FishEye2 since I am reserving my Provia for my Ricoh XR-500. Once I get my new stash of Provia from Jennie, I’m all set. Point and shoot!

Here’s some photos I took using my FishEye2.  You can also go to my gallery to check out the rest of the photos.

An attempt to get that “Dave Hill” look…

4 May, 2008 (16:33) | Digital Photography, People, Photography, Post-Production | 2 comments

I have been trying to emulate the “Dave Hill” look on my photos. This has been on going for a well over a week. I just can’t seem to get that perfect “Dave Hill” effect. Oh well, here’s some of my photos after going through that rigorous post-production.

Self-Portrait.

Aliyah.

Emmanuel Jacob

Probably, the main reason as to why I am not getting that perfect “Dave Hill” effect is because I’m not using the exact software he used to create his mind-blowing photographs. But anyway, I’ll try to get myself a Light Room and/or Lucis Arts and see what I can do from there.

Holga 120 FN | Review

3 May, 2008 (22:48) | Film Photography, Lomography, Photography, Review, Southern Lomo, Toy Cameras | 4 comments

I have been fascinated with lomography for a very long time but never had the chance to buy one until March of 2008. Since then, I cannot stop myself from splurging huge amount of money on it and I don’t really care. My mom loves it anyway. So here’s my review on the current lomographic cameras I have.

Holga 120FN

I bought my Holga 120FN back in March 2008. I got it for 1800 Pesos in Hidalgo, the melting pot of cheap photography supplies. I also added like 450 Pesos for the 135 film adaptor which by the way, I don’t recommend if you don’t want to lose the lomographic feel of your photos. When I had my first few 135 rolls processed used with my Holga 120FN, I am pretty much disappointed since there no vignettes. Which sucks, big time. But anyway, it’s a learning curve for me.

Holga 120FN

When I tried using 120s on my Holga. It’s like driving an SUV with a 20 inch dub spinners. Photos are great. The nostalgic feel of lomographs is ever present. I have used Kodak EktaColor and Fuji Provia on my Holga 120FN and I am so satisfied with it. And by the way, Holgas loves bright sunlight. So bring it wherever! Don’t be afraid to experiment. Just point and shoot. Here are some of my Holga shots from our family beach escapade.

This is an extremely outdated post.

Southern Lomo held its first EB on April 18, 2008. The gang met up at Greenbelt and had dinner at the Banana Leaf. It pricey, but hey. the food is great. Only a few were able to attend but I assume that the next time we meet up, there will be more. Here’s some pictures I grabbed from Eumir.

If you are from the south, or anywhere, you can join us at Southern Lomo. It’s a lot of fun, you know!

10 Golden Rules in Lomography

2 May, 2008 (09:27) | Lomography, Photography, Southern Lomo | 2 comments

  • Take your camera everywhere you go.
  • Use it anytime, day and night.
  • Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it.
  • Try the shot from the hip.
  • Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as closely as possible.
  • Don’t think (William Firebrace).
  • Be fast.
  • You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film.
  • Afterwards, either.
  • Don’t worry about any rules.
